Our Study Method
Why We Study This Way
At Berean Bible Study, we believe that Scripture deserves careful, thoughtful, and honest study. Our name is inspired by the Bereans of Acts 17:11, who were commended for examining the Scriptures daily to determine whether what they heard was true.
Our goal is to understand each biblical passage as its original author intended before considering later theological interpretations or modern applications. We believe that careful study strengthens faith by deepening our understanding of God’s Word.
Our Guiding Principles
Every Bible study published on this website is prepared according to the following principles:
- Scripture is studied within its historical and literary context.
- The original languages of Scripture are consulted where they clarify meaning.
- Archaeological and historical discoveries are used to illuminate, not replace, the biblical text.
- Textual criticism is presented when manuscript differences materially affect interpretation.
- Major Christian interpretive traditions are summarized fairly and respectfully.
- Conclusions are based on evidence whenever possible, while recognizing that faithful Christians sometimes reach different interpretations.
Our Study Process
Each Bible study follows a consistent structure designed to help readers move from observation to understanding.
1. Historical Context
Every passage is first examined within its historical setting. Questions such as authorship, date, audience, geography, political background, and cultural customs help us understand the circumstances in which the text was written.
2. Literary Context
No verse stands alone. We study each passage within the flow of the surrounding chapter, the purpose of the biblical book, and its place within the larger biblical narrative.
3. Original Languages
When important words or expressions influence interpretation, we examine the original Hebrew, Aramaic, or Koine Greek. Rather than simply translating individual words, we consider their range of meaning within their literary and historical context.
4. Textual Criticism
Where significant manuscript differences exist, we explain the evidence using the earliest available witnesses, including the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Septuagint, the Masoretic Text, Codex Sinaiticus, Codex Vaticanus, and other important manuscripts. Only variants that meaningfully affect interpretation are discussed.
5. Verse-by-Verse Analysis
The heart of every study is a careful examination of each verse or literary unit. We seek to explain what the text says, why it was written, and how it contributes to the author’s overall message.
6. Comparative Interpretation
Because Christians have understood certain passages differently throughout history, we summarize major perspectives from:
- Jewish interpretation
- Eastern Orthodox tradition
- Roman Catholic tradition
- Martin Luther
- John Calvin
- John Wesley
- Modern biblical scholarship
Our purpose is not to promote one tradition over another, but to help readers understand the range of responsible interpretation.
7. Canonical Connections
Scripture often develops themes across many books. We identify meaningful connections between passages while avoiding speculative or forced interpretations.
8. Contemporary Application
Only after exploring the historical meaning of a passage do we consider its significance for believers today. We seek applications that arise naturally from the biblical text while clearly distinguishing application from original meaning.
Our Commitment to Accuracy
Whenever possible, we distinguish between:
- Historical facts
- Archaeological evidence
- Linguistic evidence
- Textual evidence
- Scholarly consensus
- Traditional interpretation
- Theological inference
- Practical application
When the available evidence is uncertain or scholars disagree, we say so openly. We believe intellectual honesty strengthens rather than weakens confidence in Scripture.
Our Audience
Berean Bible Study is written for:
- Individual Bible readers
- Small-group Bible studies
- Sunday school classes
- Pastors and teachers
- Seminary students

Whether you are reading the Bible for the first time or have studied it for many years, our aim is to provide resources that are historically responsible, linguistically informed, theologically balanced, and accessible to serious students of God’s Word.
Our Prayer
Our prayer is that every study published here will encourage readers to imitate the Bereans by approaching Scripture with humility, diligence, and a desire to know God more fully through His Word.
